So how do you know if your car insurance covers hail damage?

If you carry comprehensive coverage on your car insurance policy you are likely covered for damage to your car done by hail . Comprehensive coverage can help reimburse you for damages not related to a collision. That typically includes hail damage, which could result in dents in your car’s body, cracked or shattered glass, and even interior water damage.

Hail damage does occur frequently in Illinois and it can fall at speeds of up to 120 mph. We have all seen pictures on the news of golf ball and even tennis ball size hail. Imagine the damage that could do to your vehicle if it actually hit it.

So if you carry comprehenseive coverage on your policy you should be covered for hail damage (minus your deductible). It's a good idea to consult with your agent before you have a loss to determine if you have the necessary coverage and review your deductible.

The good news is that a comprehensive claim is a claim that should not effect your rate in the future.

If you have any other insurance related questions, please email me or leave them in the comments below.

What is the difference between comp and collision coverage?

Collision and comprehensive coverage's are the coverage that would be used to repair your vehicle that has been damaged. Collision and Comprehensive (aka Comp or Other than Collision) are options coverages. Liability only policies do not include these two coverages.

What is considered a Collision loss?

A collision loss occurs when you hit another vehicle or stationary object like a street sign, post or in some cases even a house.

What is considered a Comprehensive loss?

Comp losses are also known as "acts of God" or losses that are out of your control such as you hit a deer (or other animal), hail damage, tree falls on your car, vandalism, cracked or broken windshields are all examples of comprehensive losses.

What will happen to my rate if I file a claim?

If you file a claim for a collision loss that could affect your rate because these are usually considered at fault losses because you are driving the car when the accident occurs.

If you file a claim for a comprehensive loss those usually do not have a negative impact on your rate because those losses are usually out of your control.

Costs for Collision and Comprehensive coverage

Collision coverage is one of the most expensive coverages on your car insurance so you might be able to save some money if you go with a higher deductible. (make sure you choose a deductible that you are comfortable with in case you need to file a claim)

Comprehensive coverage you can usually get by with a lower deductible  because that is usually one of the least expensive coverages on your vehicle.

Check with your local agent and see how much you might save with a higher collision deductible or how much more it might cost to go with a lower comprehensive deductible.

Looking to find the best Champaign area home insurance provider?

Best Champaign home Insurance

With the seemingly endless home insurance companies available in Illinois how do you choose the one that is right for you?

I have compiled 6 easy tips with step by step instructions to make this process a little easier for you.

1. Find the right coverage

Most people would be focused on the price, but the #1 thing you need to be concerned with is the right coverage. You will not care how cheap your home insurance is when you have a loss that isn't covered on your policy. Your home will probably be the largest investment of your life so make sure you properly protect it.

Your home insurance will have coverage for the Dwelling, Detached Structures, Personal Property, Personal Liability, and Medical Payments.

You can find out what information you will need to get an accurate home insurance estimate here

Once you know what kind of coverage you will be needing on your home insurance, it's time to research the types of insurers from which to obtain your policy.

2. Find the right provider/agent

There are 3 major types of insurers today--Captive Agents, Brokers or Independent Agents, and Direct Writers. A Captive Agent is an exclusive representative for just one insurance company, a Broker (or Independent Agent) acts as a representative for multiple insurance companies and a direct provider sells insurance straight to the consumer online or via a 1-800 number. Each type has its own advantages to consider.

Captive Agents

Some people prefer to use a captive agent, these agents only have 1 option for you to consider and can only recommend coverage from the one company they represent.  If you went to your local Ford dealer and asked him what the best car to buy was, how many times do you think he would tell you a Ford? Since they only have one option to recommend it somewhat limits their objectivity don't you think?

Brokers/Independent Agents

Some people prefer to work with brokers since brokers typically don't have a biased interest in any one particular organization. Rather , they can pinpoint the most advantageous insurer and policy depending upon your specific needs, from several insurance companies. What's more they can act as a consultant, helping you through the process of evaluating insurance carriers and making a switch should problems arise. Think of a broker as your personal insurance shopper.

Direct Providers

There are many direct providers of insurance today. Ones that work with you from a 800 number, call center or the internet. The Direct Provider advertises savings based upon eliminating the middle man (agent or broker), but do you really think the person helping you on the phone or internet is working for free? I don't think so. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about working with a Direct Provider is that there is no personal relationship. Each and every time you call for policy service you will speak to a different person and have to explain your situation all over each time. I think we all know how frustrating that can be.

Pro Tip - As somebody who has been both a Captive Agent (11 years with Allstate) and a Broker I recommend you contact your local Broker/Independent Agent. I know what it is like to only have 1 option and what it is like to have 10 options to chose from for a client. I believe you will find the best value for your insurance dollar with a broker. Since I have so many companies competing for your business as a Broker, I have a 90+% success rate against the Captive Agents.

3. Check Licenses

All agents and providers must be licensed with the State of Illinois to sell insurance. For your peace of mind, be sure you are buying from a licensed producer in your area by asking for their license number. You can verify with the Illinois Department of Insurance , either online or by phone.

4. Check the Financial Stability of the Company

Making sure the company you are considering is financially stable is an important step in making sure you have a reputable company. You want to make sure the company has the financial ability to pay any claim you may have. You can check financial scores of companies by doing research at A.M.Best, Standard & Poors, Moody's or Fitch. This is especially helpful if you are consider a lesser known insurance company. Look for A grade or better.

5. Check Online Reviews

With so much information available online nowadays you can really research your prospective agent and company. I would not trust any reviews left on an agency page or website as those could be cherry-picked to only show favorable reviews or the even could be made up, instead look to places like Yelp!, Google+ and even Facebook Fan Page reviews to get an idea of how clients feel about the agency you are considering.

6. Compare Home Insurance Rates

Finally, It's time to compare rates. If you don't have a lot of time to devote to your search contact an Independent Agent/Broker and let them shop for you. Here at Rueck Insurance we shop your rate with 10 companies (all A rated or better) and then show you the estimates for all 10 options. Together we then narrow it down to a top 3 for consideration. Next we answer any questions you may have and find the option that offers you the best combination of coverage and price.

If you prefer to use a Captive Agent or Direct Writer you would need to compile your own top 5 or top 10 list and then narrow it down on your own. This would take up much more of your valuable time.

While you may be great at your job, there are a lot of variables and nuances to insurance and I would not recommend doing it yourself. Especially when your agent will be doing it for you for FREE! (The agent is paid by the company, you should never have to pay to meet with an Insurance Agent)

Finally keep in mind that even though an insurance company might offer the biggest discounts, it might also charge the highest rates. When shopping for insurance focus on the final prices after all the discounts have been calculated.
